Hippocrates stated, “Death begins in the colon.” After more than two centuries, we can only confirm his hypothesis.
More and more patients present problems that have their primary cause as organic or functional gastrointestinal dysfunction.
The gut is populated by over 35,000 different species of bacteria. Trillions of bacteria try to live together in a balance that often tends to be unstable, because of the many food and environmental stresses to which it is subjected.
The problem is that it is often very difficult to make a correct diagnosis relying solely on clinical analysis. Many clinical conditions are not symptomatic from the point of view of the gastro-intestinal disorder that originates in this area.
What is evaluated with this test?
Thanks to this test, we are able to detect three types of disorders (which very often influence each other):
1) Intestinal bacterial. The amount of bacterial species, mostly represented in the intestine, are measured (Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli, E. coli, Clostridium, Enterococcus, Candida etc.).
2) Absorption of macronutrients, namely protein, carbohydrates, fats, fibre, water.
3) Enzymes and molecules useful from a functional point of view, i.e. Diaminossidasi (DAO), pancreatic elastase, calprotectin, lactoferrin, occult blood, histamine, defensin, bile acids, serotonin, immunoglobulins.
Why is it useful to perform this test?
It allows us to assess the bowel function in a totally customized manner. We will have the ability to objectively integrate the necessary probiotics for individual patients. Consequently, the therapy will be much more effective.
Are all probiotics equal?
Absolutely not. Probiotics are bacteria that are administered to the patient in order to rebalance intestinal flora. Each patient needs certain probiotics.
